Been Under the Hood of Your Sprinter Lately?

November 16, 2010

Our Mercedes Sprinter RV near MoabPreparing your Sprinter for fall and winter journeys? Here in Colorado, we’re hoping to make some desert road trips soon, which will take us from the ice and snow of the high mountain passes right down into the daytime heat of the Utah desert, and back again – a full workout for both drivers and engines.

So how about checking under the hood before hitting the road again? Here’s some help with common maintenance chores for your Mercedes Sprinter:

  • Changing the engine oil and filter
  • Changing the diesel fuel filter
  • Changing the air filter/cleaner

First off, where can you find the special Sprinter tools you’ll need? Here in Boulder, Assenmacher Specialty Tools (at 6440 Odell Place, in Gunbarrel) has seven specialty tools available specifically for the Mercedes Sprinter (search for “Sprinter”):

  • FZ 55 – Dodge Sprinter Tank Adapter (for 2007-2010 Sprinters)
  • H 4760-5 – Glow Plug Pliers (for Sprinters with 2.7-liter diesel engine)
  • OFAUD1000 – Euro 1/4 turn Oil Filler (funnel)
  • M 0219 – 74mm Oil Filter Wrench (3.5-liter V6 gas NCV3)
  • M 0284 – 84mm Oil Filter Wrench (3.0-liter V6 diesel NCV3)
  • SPR 886 – Sprinter Trans. Dipstick
  • 2175 – 74.5mm Oil Filter Socket (2.7-liter 5-cyl T1N)

If those fit the bill for your Sprinter, then for the exact maintenance procedures, you can:

  • consult your Sprinter’s service manual
  • read these writeups (kudos to Keith Pierce for these! Keith produced these after working on his 2.7-liter T1N Sprinter)
  • check out these Sprinter maintenance videos, posted by Paul in the UK (for a 2.2-liter Mercedes Sprinter 311 CDI).

Sprinter Oil Change & Oil Filter

Before you view this video, also see Changing the Oil in a Sprinter (procedures specific to a NAFTA 2.7-liter 5 cyl), (PDF). And while you’re changing the oil and filter, you may also want to remove and clean the EGR valve.

Sprinter Fuel Filter

If you change your Sprinter fuel filter, you must ensure you purge all air from the fuel filter when installing the new filter. If you do not, the fuel pump will lose its prime, and you won’t be able to start the engine. Before you view this video, also see Changing the Fuel Filter in a Sprinter (for NAFTA 2002 2.7-liter 5-cyl), (PDF)

Just want a Sprinter dealer to do the work for you? If you’re on the Front Range in Colorado, call up Terry Mason, the Sprinter service advisor at Mercedes-Benz Westminster, at 303-410-7818, and ask him if their Sprinter service specials are still available.
